- There is only one God, even though He is called by many names.
“I bear witness, O my God, that Thou hast created me to know Thee and to worship Thee.”
“…limit all thy thoughts and all thy words to the remembrance of God and His praise; to spreading His sweet savours abroad, and performing righteous acts…”
- All religions are one, because they all come from one God through His chosen Messengers or Manifestations.
“All the Prophets of God have brought the Message of love.”
“…the divine Religions (are) one, because the Reality is one and cannot be two. All the prophets are united in their message, and unshaken. They are like the sun; in different seasons they ascend from different rising points on the horizon. Therefore every ancient prophet gave the glad tidings of the future, and every future has accepted the past.”
- All of the Bahá’í teachings promote the unity of humanity.
“…all the children of men are under the mercy of the Great God. …all nations and peoples must consider themselves brethren. They are all descendants from Adam. They are the branches, leaves, flowers and fruits of one tree.”
- Everyone, male and female, has the right to a basic education, so that each can seek out the truth themselves and be able to judge carefully with an open mind.
“People are too easily led by tradition. It is because of this that they are often antagonistic to each other, and dispute with one another. But the manifesting of Truth discovers the darkness and becomes the cause of Oneness of faith and belief: because Truth cannot be two! That is not possible.”
- Men and women are equal. Each must respect the other.
All must have equal rights and opportunities.
“Man and woman both should be educated equally and equally regarded.”
- All prejudices must be removed. Prejudice is an emotional commitment to ignorance.
“…racial, patriotic, religious and class prejudice (have) been the cause of the destruction of humanity.” “All men must be treated equally.”
- True religion is in harmony with reason and scientific knowledge.
“Religion and science are inter-twined with each other and cannot be separated. These are the two wings with which humanity must fly. One wing is not enough. Every religion which does not concern itself with science is mere tradition, and that is not the essential. Therefore science, education and civilization are most important necessities for the full religious life.”
- Work in service to others is the same as worshipping God.
“Work done in the spirit of service is the highest form of worship.”
“…each child must be taught a profession, art, or trade, so that every member of the community will be enabled to earn his own livelihood.”
- Extremes of wealth and poverty must be ended.
“The arrangements of the circumstances of the people must be such that poverty shall disappear, and that every one as far as possible, according to his position and rank, shall be comfortable.”
- New ways must be adopted to promote the unity of all humanity, such as one world language, one world currency, one world system of measurement, etc.
- Loyalty to the government, but no involvement in party politics.
“In every country where any of this people reside, they must behave towards the government of that country with loyalty, honesty and truthfulness.”
“We must obey and be the wellwishers of the government of the land… The essence of the Bahá’í spirit is that in order to establish a better social order and economic condition, there must be allegiance to the laws and principles of government.”
“The Faith is not opposed to the true interest of any nation, nor is it against any party or faction. It holds aloof from all controversies… enjoining upon its followers loyalty to government and a sane patriotism. This love for their country the Bahá'ís show by serving its well-being in their daily activity, or working in the administrative channel of the government instead of through party politics…”
- The unity of the family, as the basic unit of society, must be protected and nurtured. Marriage is encouraged and divorce strongly discouraged.
“…chastity should be strictly practised by both sexes, not only because it is in itself highly commendable ethically, but also due to its being the only way to a happy and successful marital life. Sex relationships of any form, outside marriage, are not permissible…”
- High ethical and moral standards in one’s personal life.
“Truthfulness is the foundation of all human virtues.” “Beautify your tongues, O people, with truthfulness, and adorn your souls with the ornament of honesty.”
“Let integrity and uprightness distinguish all thine acts.”
“Such a chaste and holy life, with its implications of modesty, purity, temperance, decency, and clean-mindedness, involves no less than the exercise of moderation in all that pertains to dress, language, amusements, and all artistic and literary avocations. It demands daily vigilance in the control of one's carnal desires and corrupt inclinations. It calls for the abandonment of a frivolous conduct, with its excessive attachment to trivial and often misdirected pleasures. It requires total abstinence from all alcoholic drinks, from opium, and from similar habit-forming drugs. It condemns the prostitution of art and of literature, the practices of nudism and of companionate marriage, infidelity in marital relationships, and all manner of promiscuity, of easy familiarity, and of sexual vices. It can tolerate no compromise with the theories, the standards, the habits, and the excesses of a decadent age. Nay rather it seeks to demonstrate, through the dynamic force of its example, the pernicious character of such theories, the falsity of such standards, the hollowness of such claims, the perversity of such habits, and the sacrilegious character of such excesses.”
- Everyone was created to help establish the Kingdom of God on earth.
“All men have been created to carry forward an ever-advancing civilization.”
“…Hearts must receive the Bounty of the Holy Spirit, so that spiritual civilization may be established. For material civilization is not adequate for the needs of mankind and cannot be the cause of its happiness. Material civilization is like the body and spiritual civilization is like the soul. Body without soul cannot live.”
- “World peace is not only possible but inevitable. It is the next stage in the evolution of this planet...”
